Survival Boy

Huck is extremely crafty, and can completely sustain himself on an island. He is 12 or 13. I have a brother who is 12, and he can't even figure out the washing machine, but this boy can fake his own murder. Twain seems to have a knack for writing about crafty children. Why didn't he make Huck a little older? He could have been 16 or 17, and it would a bit easier to wrap my mind around. This child is more independent than I am.

Huck is very crafty, I agree. I don't even know how to work the washing machine, so he is way ahead of me for being 12. All of his ideas seem to have a lot of brilliant thought put into them. If it were me, I would have just took off, not thinking if they would come looking for me or not. What Huck did was very intelligent and I appreciate his thought process.

I think Twain's purpose for creating a character at a young age is because normally we wouldn't think of kids that age to defend themselves or come up with those ideas.

I think Huck has been forced to figure out how to be that independent. He has a father that doesn't care anything about him. If he didn't learn how to survive on his own, he would probably be beat to death by his father.
