Opposites Attract
Huck and Tom are very different types of boys as we find out in the beginning of the story. Tom is more imaginative while Huck is more literal. I think this is because Huck had to grow up on his own. With a dad who beat him and everything, he had to "grow up" very quickly. He never really got to be a kid. He had to deal with grown up issues his whole life.

I agree. Somewhere in the stress while still being a child, Huck lost his imagination, because everything was so real to him as a young child. Things a young child shouldn't experience until mature, or at all.
I think their personalities are what make them perfect friends. For Huck, I agree he had to grow up sooner than more kids at his age would have to. Huck is more realistic and is more aware of the things around him. Tom is still in the stage where he doesn't have a care in the world how things are. Tom hasn't had to go through what Huck has. Tom has shown Huck how to be a kid at the same time because he uses a lot of imagination in the beginning of the story.
I agree that the abuse he went through when he was younger made Huck loose his imagination to grow up quickly. At the same time I believe his conflicting literal personality with Tom's imaginative made them good friends.
I loved it when Tom and Huck were arguing about how to stay safe after they ambuscaded the picnic. Tom said that there was a group of magical beings after them, and all Huck could think about was a way to hire the beings for protection. One thing I may do after finishing this book is read Tom Sawyer. How on Earth did these two kids meet in the first place if Huck skips school and Tom is so different? My gut instinct immediately tells me they met during some shenanigans...
